[1] Only the top of this funerary stele survives, preserving the crowning acanthus decoration ("anthemion") and the top of the relief ground. The name and patronymic of a woman apparently named Euphylla were inscribed rather roughly on what is now a worn-away area at the base of the anthemion. This appears to have been a later addition. One might speculate whether or not it is significant that a man apparently named Pindar seems have given his daughter the rare name Euphylla: perhaps it had resonance with the famous Theban poet’s description of Nemea as “leafy” (euphyllos: Pindar, Isthm. 6.61). [2] This monument was originally for Aristoklea, whose name is preserved on the architrave. The name is common in Attica. In contrast to AIUK 8 (Broomhall) no. 1 this earlier name was not erased when the later one was added; the later name perhaps, therefore, commemorated a member of the same family. Such later additions of names to existing funerary monuments are not uncommon; cf. e.g. AIUK 3 (Fitzwilliam) no. 4. [3] Nothing remains of the relief below except a slight trace of sculpture, including the top of a framing pilaster to the left and perhaps the top of a female head in the centre.
