[1] This monument is a typical example of a common type of Athenian funerary monument of the fourth century BC. Under a pedimental moulding is an inscription running above a framed figurative scene depicted in shallow relief. The inscription names the person commemorated as Chairippe daughter of Euphranor of Lamptrai. Both names are quite common, but nothing more is known about these particular individuals. [2] In the relief a female, identifiable as Chairippe, sits on a chair; she shakes hands with a bearded man standing opposite her, apparently her father, Euphranor. She had perhaps died before marriage, as she does not have her mantle pulled up over her head, as we would expect if she were a married woman; and her hairstyle – including a fillet – is also indicative of an unmarried woman. The hand-shake (dexiosis) scene is very common in Attic funerary art. It should not be interpreted as specifically a gesture of greeting or farewell, but rather one of family unity and human solidarity (cf. Liddel and Low, AIUK 5 (Lyme Park), no. 1).
