[1] This choregic dedication comprises two non-joining fragments, now lost, preserving the left and right sides of the inscription on a monument of uncertain character. It was made by Demosthenes son of Demainetos of Paiania, whose name implies that he was related to the famous orator, Demosthenes son of Demosthenes of Paiania. He was also co-dedicator of the high-quality monument known as the Bryaxis base, with his father, and brother, Demeas, as victorious phylarchs (commanders of tribal contingents of cavalry) in the anthippasia competition, IG II³ 4, 252. Our monument was duly discovered in a village not far from Liopesi (ancient Paiania). The inclusion of the demotic of the choregos in a dedication commemorating victory in the Rural Dionysia (on which see IG II³ 4, 498, with notes) is unusual, but not unparalleled (cf. IG II³ 4, 513 and 514) and choregic monuments from the City Dionysia mostly commemorate victories in dithyramb and were erected in the area of the city theatre (cf. IG II³ 4, 460), whereas monuments of the Dionysia in the demes quite commonly commemorate victories in tragedy. This, however, is the only evidence for the Paianian Rural Dionysia.
