[1] This is one of over fifty statue bases for the Emperor Hadrian (r. 117-138 AD) attested from Athens. The epithet "Olympios" indicates a date after 128/9 AD, probably at or after the consecration of the Temple of Olympian Zeus in 132 AD (see IG II² 3290 with notes). On Hadrian and his relationship with Athens, see IG II² 5185 with notes. Hadrian visited Byzantion, the fatherland of the unidentifiable dedicator, several times during his reign and served as eponymous magistrate there at least twice (IK Byzantion 37-38; A. Birley, Hadrian, 1997, 85, 157). A hole is preserved on the upper surface for the left foot of a bronze statue. Thus, the base should not be connected with the marble torso from a statue of Hadrian found in the Agora (Ag. S 166). Two other statues of Hadrian in the Agora are mentioned by Pausanias (1.3.2 and 1.5.5).
