[1] Textual note: The restorations by S.Follet, Bulletin épigraphique (1999) 222 (=SEG 47.222) are tentative, since the base, which was found in rescue excavations in the early 1990s, has only ever received a preliminary publication (B. Orphanou, Arch. Delt. 47, 1992, Β, 26 = SEG 45.179).

This is one of over fifty statue bases for the Emperor Hadrian (r. 117-138 AD) attested from Athens (on Hadrian and his relationship with Athens, see IG II² 5185 with notes). The findspot and the epithet "Olympios," if correctly restored, probably indicate that it was part of the group of statues erected in the precinct of the Temple of Olympian Zeus to celebrate its consecration in 132 AD (see IG II² 3290 with notes). The dedicators are the Artists of Dionysos, an empire-wide association of actors and dramatists (see IG II² 1320 and AIUK 4.3A (BM Decrees) 9, with notes). Hadrian writes to their Athenian branch in SEG 33.139 and perhaps IG II² 1348. The archon in ll. 11-12 is probably the archon of the association, not an Athenian archon.
