[1] This is the opening of a letter from the emperor Hadrian to the artists of Dionysos at Athens, who organised theatrical performances (see AIUK 4.3A (BM Decrees), 9). The reason for the letter is unclear, but it is possible that it is connected to disputes arising from the establishment of another association of artists, dedicated to Antinoos as "the Dancer" ca. 130 AD (see SEG 30.89).
