[1] This is one of over fifty statue bases for the Emperor Hadrian (r. 117-138 AD) attested from Athens. The epithet "Olympios" indicates a date after 128/9 AD (F. Camia in A. Kouremenos, The Province of Achaea in the 2nd Century CE, 2022, 98-99). Combined with the findspot, it probably means that the statue was erected to celebrate Hadrian's consecration of the Temple of Olympian Zeus in 132 AD (see IG II² 3290 with notes). The dedicator, Gaius Claudius Silianus Polykritos is honoured as a hearth initiate in I Eleusis 373. He appears to be related to Gaius Silius Polykritos of Azenia, who was prominent in the reign of Caligula (IG II² 3266), from a family that was related to that of Herodes Atticus and can be traced back to the 130s BC (Byrne, Roman Citizens 2003, stemma v).
