Philemon and Pasippos Apollonios honour Hadrian

(This statue of) Emperor Caesar Trajan Hadrian Olympios, the saviour of our grandfather (5) Philemon, (was erected by) Philemon and Pasippos [also called] Apollonios for their own benefactor, through the management (epimelētou) of their father (10) Polyouchos son of Kartidamas.

[1] This is one of over fifty statue bases for the Emperor Hadrian (r. 117-138 AD) attested from Athens. The epithet "Olympios" indicates a date after 128/9 AD (F. Camia in A. Kouremenos, The Province of Achaea in the 2nd Century CE, 2022, 98-99). Along with the findspot of the base, it probably indicates that the statue was erected to celebrate Hadrian's consecration of the Temple of Olympian Zeus in 132 AD (see IG II² 3290 with notes). Philemon and Pasippos Apollonios erected the statue to commemorate some service rendered by Hadrian to their maternal grandfather, also called Philemon, presumably deceased. Their father, Polyouchos, actually managed the erection, presumably because Philemon and Pasippos were too young. They belonged to the dominant family on Thera (Santorini) and erected a similar statue base there (IG XII 3, 477). Polyouchos also contributed to the construction of a stoa on Thera in honour of Trajan (IG XII 3, 324).
