[1] This is the bottom part of a statue base for an unknown priest of the emperor Tiberius (r. 14 – 37 AD) and interpreter (exegetes, a religious professional who served on a long-term basis and advised on the details of sacrifices and other rituals, see I Eleusis 489 with notes). Two priests of Tiberius are attested to date: Papius of Marathon (I Eleusis 334) and Polycharmos of Marathon, an ancestor of Herodes Atticus (I Eleusis 344). Clinton in I Eleusis identifies the honorand of this inscription with the former, but Papius appears to be a naturalised Athenian and should not therefore be a member of the Eumolpidai. The latter is also priest of Apollo Patroos, unlike the present individual. On Tiberius and Athens, see Agora XVIII 253 with notes.
