[1] This fragment appears to derive from a double base which once bore statues of Faustina Minor, the wife and empress of Marcus Aurelius and perhaps Domitia Lucilla, Marcus’ mother. The consul in l. 7, whose name is lost, was the erector of the statues. Faustina was the daughter of Marcus’ predecessor Antoninus Pius and her marriage to Marcus in 145 AD helped to solidify his position as heir. The form of Marcus Aurelius’ name here indicates a date between that marriage and his succession to the throne in 161 AD. The marriage was also commemorated by SEG 39.245. She died in 175 AD, but further statues of her were erected at Eleusis as part of a pair of depictions of the Imperial family in 180-182 AD (I Eleusis 507-508). On Faustina, see B.
