[1] Unusually for an Attic dedication, fragment a is inscribed not on a statue-base, but on the thigh of the statue itself, a larger than life-size (male) kouros. Fr. b is a smaller fragment of similar type, which might or might not belong to the same statue. Both were found together in the same deposit by the temple of Athena at Sounion and belong to a series of votive kouroi. The date can not be pinned down with certainty, but there is a good possibility that the fragments pre-date the creation of the demes by Cleisthenes at the end of the 6th century BC and, if so, indicate that the Sounians had a collective identity before that. See G. R. Stanton, ABSA 91, 1996, 347-49 (noting that the rho of ἀρχ[εγέτει] is legible, = SEG 46.69); H. R. Goette, Ο αξιόλογος δήμος Σούνιον, 2000, 34-35 (rejecting the conventional restoration of fr. a l. 1 to yield Zeus Archegetes as recipient and noting the alternative, Ἀ[θεναίαι], "to Athena", in l. 2 in place of ἀ[νέθεσαν] = SEG 50.83. Given the findspot, and in the absence of other indications that Zeus was regarded as a founder-hero, "Archegetes", at Sounion, Athena would be a less unexpected recipient); Humphreys, Kinship, 952. For a 5th century Assembly decree relating to Sounion see IG I³ 8; on the deme in the 4th century, IG II² 1180; for Hellenistic decrees of military units based at the fortress there see IG II² 1260, with notes.
