[1] The inscription is on part of the neck flap of a “Corinthian” helmet, which was dedicated on the Acropolis as a prize of war, from Lemnos (restored on the basis of a comparable Corinthian helmet with similar writing dedicated at Olympia, which has “Lem[nos]”, IG I³ 1466), or perhaps Lesbos. A connection has been suggested with a series of other inscribed helmets (IG I³ 522 bis, 1472, and possibly IG XII Suppl. 337), and with the conquest of Lemnos by Miltiades in the 500s or 490s BC (Hdt. 6.136, 140; Diodoros 10.19.6).
