[1] The inscription is on a small fragment of a helmet of the type known as “Chalkidian”, which was dedicated on the Acropolis as a prize of war from an enemy whose name is not preserved. The Persians have been suggested, on the basis of a very similar, but better preserved inscribed helmet found at Olympia and possibly deriving from the spoils of the Battle of Marathon (IG I³ 1467). This type of “raw” dedication is broadly a feature of archaic and early classical dedicatory practice at Athens, in contrast to “converted” dedications, in which spoils are transmuted e.g. into a statue (cf.
