[1] This bronze cauldron is one of three inscribed bronze vessels, potentially linked to the Funerary Games (Epitaphios agon). For the other two, see IG I³ 523 and 525. When discovered, it contained charred human bones, suggesting that, like 523, it was reused in a burial. A third cauldron of the same type as 523 and 524, but too damaged to tell whether it bore an inscription, was used as a burial urn in the Kerameikos (W. Koenigs, U. Knigge and A. Mallwitz, Rundbauten im Kerameikos [= Kerameikos 12], 1980, 69).
