[1] This bronze hydria is one of three inscribed bronze vessels potentially linked to the Funerary Games (Epitaphios agon). For the other two, see IG I³ 523 and 524. The style of the hydria seems to date it after ca. 450 BC, though the lettering may pull towards a slightly earlier date. Clairmont, Patrios Nomos (1983) 1.24-5 argues that the event that this hydria was won in was the torch-race (lampadedromia), since a hydria is attested as the prize for a torch race on ARV² 1040.10 and at the Panathenaia in IG II² 2311, l. 77. The torch-race is not explicitly attested as an event of the Funerary Games, but Clairmont proposes that the event is depicted on a white lekythos on which a youth runs past a tomb holding a long black object (ARV² 1246.2).
