[1] This is a funerary stele for Zosimianos, head of the Stoic school of philosophy at Athens (founded by Zeno of Kition). Successor (diadochos) was the title of the head of the Platonic Academy, the Epicurean garden, and the Stoic school at Athens (see SEG 55.250 with notes). The inscription was found on the Acropolis, but must have originally been erected somewhere else, since this would not have been an appropriate location for a burial.
