[1] This plaque contains a pair of tabulae ansatae, one above the other. The first contains a list of hierophylakes (sanctuary-guards) for the year 171/2 AD. The findspot may indicate that they were responsible for the Asklepieion on the south slope of the Acropolis (on which see IG II³ 4, 665 with notes), but the stele could have fallen from the Acropolis or been brought from elsewhere. It appears that there were three of these guards who served annually. They were probably ceremonial officers, rather than being actually responsible for the security of their sanctuary (cf. the four phrouroi, ‘garrisoners,’ attested at Epidauros, K. Clinton in R. Hägg, Ancient Greek Cult Practice from the Epigraphical Evidence, 1994, 20). Eukarpos and Philokles are also attested as functionaries in the ephebate. [2] 171/2 AD was a year of ‘anarchy’, i.e. no archon was elected, so the year was referred to by the archon for the previous year. [3] The second tabula ansata was clearly intended to contain a list of hierophylakes for 172/3, but for some reason it was never inscribed.
