[1] This is a dedication by the prytany of Pandionis, which had won the competition for the best prytany in its year in office, as IG I³ 515 (Erechtheis) and IG II³ 4, 21 (Pandionis). Like other prytany dedications of Pandionis, it will originally have been set up in the sanctuary of Pandion on the acropolis. As commonly with inscriptions set up on the acropolis it had wandered down to the lower city by the time of discovery in the 19th century. It is now lost and there are several uncertainties in the readings, e.g. in l. 16, where "E" might be the beginning of a name added later, and in l. 30 where U. Koehler suggested reading the heading of the deme Probalinthos. The names were perhaps arranged by trittys, the coastal trittys in col. 1, the urban trittys in col. 2 (on the trittys allocation of Probalinthos cf. note on IG II³ 4, 26), and the inland trittys in col. 3. [2] This is probably Aristophanes the famous comic dramatist, who died some time after 388 BC and is known to have belonged to the deme Kydathenaion, cf. PCG III 2 (1984), p. 8. Orthography and prosopography both indicate a date for this inscription in the first half of the fourth century. [3] Cf. IG II³ 4, 26 l. 61 with note. [4] This may have been the [anti]grapheus, "copy secretary" (cf. Agora XV 43, 231, with notes, cf. P. J. Rhodes, The Athenian Boule, 1972, 237-39), or the [ana]grapheus, "recorder", (cf. Agora XV 43, 229, with notes).
