[1] This horos, seen in the 19th century in Markopoulo (but probably originating in Myrrhinous, which is locatable 4 km S.E. of Markopoulo at Merenda) marks property used as security for a loan of 750 dr. to an unknown individual by the god Dionysos. Although it differs in its precise wording, the reference to Dionysos would be consistent with it being, like SEG 63.156 (Artemis Kolainis), one of the horoi marking loans by Myrrhinous erected under the provisions of IG II² 1183, ll. 27-32, which stipulates that horoi marking loans by the deme should specify the deity from whose fund the loan was made. Harris, CQ 43, 1993, 73-95; and in general on the terminology of such transactions, RO 36, n. 6. Though not especially common, the reference to a written agreement (synthekai) specifying the terms of a transaction involving property or security, is also found in some other inscriptions.
