[1] This is part of a columnar monument erected for the future emperor Tiberius (r. 14 – 37 AD) sometime before his adoption by Augustus in 4 AD. Four or five other Athenian monuments date to this period (IG II² 3245-3247, Agora XVIII 252 and possibly IG II² 3248, nearly half of all the monuments for Tiberius known from Athens). This may indicate that Tiberius already had a close connection with Athens before 4 AD. There is no literary evidence for this, but Agora XVIII 252 mentions that Tiberius' ancestors (i.e. the Claudii Nerones and Claudii Pulchri) had ties to Athens. His first wife, Vipsania, was the granddaughter of Titus Pomponius Atticus, long-time resident and benefactor of Athens (cf. I Eleusis 291, col. ii). Opportunities for engagement with Athens were provided by two periods spent in the Eastern Mediterranean. In 21-20 BC he travelled through the region on his way to and from Armenia. Between 6 BC and 2 AD, he retired from private life in favour of Augustus' grandchildren Gaius and Lucius Caesar and was based in the Aegean at Rhodes, but still ostensibly held legal authority second only to that of Augustus. He also entered chariot teams in Greek festival games during this period (IvO 220; I Thespiae 188, ll. 76-77) and may have done the same at the Panathenaia.
