[1] This inscription derives from a columnar monument honouring the future Emperor Tiberius (r. 14-37 AD) some time before his adoption by his step-father Augustus in 4 AD. There are three holes on top of the block for attaching another drum. In total, this column would have been at least 5 m tall, including the statue. The reference to ancestors is obscure, but may indicate that earlier generations of Tiberius' paternal and maternal ancestors, the Claudii Nerones and Claudii Pulchri, already had ties with Athens (M.
