[1] This fragment derives from the base of a statue of the emperor Claudius (r. 41-54 AD) and was erected shortly after his accession. On the evidence for Claudius at Athens, see IG II² 3268 with notes. The name of the dedicator is not preserved but was probably the Athenian civic authorities. The inscription was discovered by Koumanoudes in excavations in the area of the Athenian agora in 1885, but now seems to be lost.
