[1] This is part of a set of statues of Hadrian erected in the Theatre of Dioynsos by each of the twelve Athenian tribes. The others are IG II² 3287B-3287D. These tribal statues were erected after Hadrian's accession in 117 AD, but before the reduction of the Council to 500 members in 124/5 AD. The most likely occasions are immediately following his accession or during his visit in 124/5 AD, when he hosted the Dionysia festival (Historia Augusta, Hadrian 13.1). IG II² 3286 had already been erected for Hadrian at the front of the central wedge of the theatre in 112/3 AD, before his accession. These statues were placed at the front of the other twelve wedges, in the standard tribal order, starting with Erechtheis (tribe I) in the westernmost wedge and ending with Attalis (tribe XII) in the easternmost wedge. These wedges seem to have been the designated seating for each of the tribes in the Imperial period (see SEG 30.82 with notes). The erection of multiple statues of a single individual was an established honour in the Hellenistic and Roman periods. The demes (and other entities?) erected 300 or 360 statues for Demetrios of Phaleron between 317 and 307 BC (SEG 25.206 with note), the Areopagos, Council, and People erected statues throughout the city for Julius Nikanor in the early first century AD (see IG II² 1069 with notes) and for Q. Trebellius Rufus ca. 90 AD (Agora XVIII 398). In the 120s AD, each of the tribes erected a set of statues for Tiberius Claudius Attikos and his wife Vibullia Alkia in the Agora around the same time as this set of statues were set up (IG II² 3597a with notes) and around 132 AD cities throughout the empire erected statues of Hadrian in the Olympieion (IG II² 3290 with notes).
