[1] This is the base of a statue of Hadrian (r. 117-138 AD) erected posthumously at Eleusis. Hadrian's epithet Panhellenios refers to his connection to the Panhellenion, which had close ties with Eleusis, see IG II³ 4 215 with notes. A similar set of bases were subsequently erected at Eleusis for Marcus Aurelius and his family (I Eleusis 505-510). All seven bases were found near a pair of monumental archways built by the Panhellenes, with which they were probably associated (cf. IG II³ 4 217-218) On Hadrian and his relationship with Athens, see IG II² 5185 with notes. There are two holes in the top of the base for the feet of a bronze statue.
