[1] This was the base of a statue or altar dedicated to the Emperor Antoninus Pius (r. 138-161 AD), on whom see Oliver, Constitutions 134 with notes. The text is in an Archaising form of Doric Greek, suggesting that it was dedicated by a city of Doric heritage, such as Sparta. For Imperial honours erected at Athens by other cities, cf. IG II² 3290. The emperor is identified with Zeus Eleutherios (‘of freedom’), cf. IG II² 1990, 1996, and 3322. The inscription was seen by the Abbé Fourmont in the eighteenth century and perhaps by K. S. Pittakis in the early nineteenth century (L’ancienne Athènes, 1835, 54), but is now lost.
