[1] This statue base was probably erected on the Acropolis for Julia Domna, wife of Septimius Severus, who received the title of Mother of the Camps in 196 AD (cf. AIUK 7 (Chatsworth) 2). The daughter of -kles of Piraeus is probably the priestess of Athena Polia. Agora XV 340 and 341 provide for the close association of the cults of Julia Domna and Athena Polias, including the installation of statues of Domna in the Erechtheion (probably) and the Parthenon; it is unclear whether this base can be linked with either of those statues. On Athenian statues and dedications connected with the Severan dynasty, see SEG 34.184. Alternatively, the statue may have been erected for Faustina the Younger, wife of Marcus Aurelius, who also held the title from 174 until her death and deification in 175 (AIUK 7 (Chatsworth) p. 17 n. 47, cf. IG II² 5210).
