[1] Gaius Julius Nikanor was the son of Areios Didymos of Alexandria, a Stoic philosopher and friend of Augustus (Plutarch Antony 80; Cassius Dio 51.16.4), who wrote a work of consolation for Livia following the death of Drusus in 9 BC (Seneca, Consolatio ad Marciam 4-5). Suetonius says that Nikanor was a scholar in his own right (Life of Augustus 89). He must have received Athenian citizenship, since his own son, Areios of Oion was archon in the mid-first century AD (IG II³ 4, 129). He is distinct from Julius Nikanor “the New Homer and New Themistokles,” who came from Hierapolis in Syria and was probably active later (see IG II² 1069 with notes).
