Symmachos honours Aurelius Herakleides

IG II² 3801 Date: ca. 170-200 AD

In accordance with the decision of the mighty Council of the 500, (this herm of) Aurelius Herakleides of Eupyridai, the successor (diadochon) (5)of the doctrines from Zeno, (was erected by) Symmachos (son of Symmachos) of Phlya, for his teacher, on account of his excellence.^[1]

[1] This herm honoured Aurelius Herakleides, head of the Stoic school of philosophy at Athens (founded by Zeno of Kition). He may be identical with the Stoic philosopher Herakleides whose criticism of Aristotle's view of the soul is rebutted by Alexander of Aphrodisias (R. W. Sharples in R. Sorabji, Aristotle Transformed, 1990, 98-100), but the name is very common. "Successor" (diadochos) was the title of the heads of the Platonic Academy, the Epicurean garden, and the Stoic school at Athens (see SEG 55.250 with notes). Another honorific herm for Herakleides, erected in accordance with the decision of the Areopagos (IG II² 3989), was found nearby. It may be that the Areopagos and Council (and the People?) granted the right to erect a herm on behalf of each of them. For the date, which is based on prosopography, see S.
