[1] This monument commemorated [Athenian infantry] killed in the two major land battles of the Corinthian War in 394 BC, at the river Nemea near Corinth, and at Koroneia in Boeotia. Apparently it originally stood next to IG II² 5222 (q.v. for the historical circumstances), cut by the same mason (Tracy) and commemorating the cavalry who died, on the road from the Dipylon gate to the Academy (Clairmont). It is the latest in the long series of Athenian public funerary monuments listing war dead, cf. IG I³ 1147 with n. 1. The stele is crowned by a vivid relief depicting a mounted warrior to the right and an infantryman to the left, both attacking an enemy on the ground. Of a further horse to the left only the tail survives (photos: Clairmont, and R. Osborne, in D. Pritchard ed., War, Democracy and Culture in Classical Athens, 251). It is notable not only that one public and one private monument (IG II² 6217) commemorate the cavalry in this year’s battles, but that horsemen even feature in the relief of this monument, which apparently commemorated infantry casualties. Together the monuments seem intended to convey an impression that the cavalry played an unusually prominent role (on the interpretation of this see further the note to IG II² 5222).
