[1] This is a pedimental stele with a relief (a Bildfeldstele), depicting a young male dressed in a chiton and chlamys with a dog at his right hand and holding a ball in his left; two small, stacked objects on the ground to his left may be book rolls. The dress and attributes mark Kalliphanes as being on the cusp of adulthood, physically mature but still displaying elements of youth. The inscription names both his birth father and his adopted father, a form of identification that became common at Athens from the Hellenistic period onwards. The monument is dated on the basis of the relief sculpture to the first half of the first century AD (von Moock).

The monument was found at the house of P. Rosses on Mollierou St. (likely an error for Myllerou St.) in the area of the ancient Kerameikos. Three other funerary monuments may have belonged to a grave precinct of Kalliphanes’ family that perhaps included his adopted father, since his kioniskos was found very close to this monument (see IG II² 7693).
