[1] This is one of a set of bases with Latin inscriptions erected in the Roman Agora for the emperor Constantine and his family (see IG II² 5, 13269 with notes; on the Roman Agora generally, see IG II³ 4, 12 with notes). The name of the original honorand has been erased and replaced with that of Constans, who was Caesar (junior co-emperor) 335-340 AD and became an Augustus (senior co-emperor) after he defeated his brother Constantine II at the Battle of Aquileia in 340 AD. The epithets, “most noble and strongest” indicate that it was originally erected for a Caesar, but the title in l. 3 has been changed to Augustus. The original honorand might have been his cousin Dalmatius, who was appointed Caesar in 335 AD and was murdered in 337 AD.
