[1] This statue base for emperor Constantine II (r. 337-340 AD), is part of a set of bases with Latin inscriptions erected in the Roman Agora for the emperor Constantine I (r. 307-337) and his family (see IG II² 5, 13269 with notes; on the Roman Agora generally, see IG II³ 4, 12). The epithets, “most noble and strongest” indicate that it was originally erected when he was Caesar (junior emperor), between 317 and 337 AD. The title Caesar was replaced with Augustus (senior emperor) when he became emperor in 337, along with his younger brother Constantinus. His name was erased from the inscription as part of the condemnation of his memory after he died fighting his brother Constans at the Battle of Aquileia in 340 (for evidence, see E.
