(This statue of) the most brilliant Hegeias son of Timokrates, having served in the eponymous archonship with the greatest love of honour 5 and having been festival commander most conspicuously, the whole City, having honoured him as its own benefactor, erected.^[1]

[1] This statue base was erected to honour the archon Hegeias, who is otherwise unknown. A date in the first half of the fourth century AD is indicated by letter forms and the base's subsequent reuse at the beginning of the fifth century AD (E. Sironen in P. Castrén, Post-Herulian Athens, 1994, p. 27). Hegeias is one of only five known archons between the Herulian Sack in 267 AD and the last attestation of the office at the end of the fifth century AD (for a full list, see E. Sironen in P. Castrén, Post-Herulian Athens, 1994, 45 n. 163). He belongs to a group of wealthy fourth-century benefactors, honoured for expenditure on traditional Athenian religion, along with Flavius Septimius Marcellinus in IG II² 5, 13291 and Erotios in AIUK 11 (Ashmolean), no. 3. The festival commander (panegyriarchos) was one of the most common liturgies in Imperial Athens, responsible for feeding the attendees at the Eleusinian Mysteries and perhaps also for other aspects of that festival (D. Geagan, Athenian Constitution after Sulla, 1967, 136). This was the second use of the base. It was originally made for Flavius Teisamenos ca. 230 AD (IG II² 3701). This inscription was on the side to the left of the original one. In the fifth century, the base was reused again for a statue of the sophist Ploutarchos (IG II² 5, 13281).
