In the archonship of Philon (178/7), who came after Menedemos (179/8), on the ninth of Pyanopsion, the seventeenth of the prytany. Principal Assembly in the theatre. The Council and the People decided. (5) Aristogeiton son of Poly- of - proposed: since Antiochos,^[1] [son?] of king [Antiochos and brother of?] [king] Seleukos, having inherited from his forefathers his good will towards the People, being a good [man?] in [every way?] . . . [1] When the Seleukid Antiochos III reached a peace settlement with the Romans in 188 BC, he was required to send his son, Antiochos, as a hostage to Rome (Livy 42.6.9), though the younger Antiochos' nephew, Demetrios, was later sent to take his place. On the death of the younger Antiochos' brother (and Demetrios' father), Seleukos IV Philopator (reigned 187-175), Antiochos was in Athens and with the help of Eumenes II of Pergamon and his brothers, successfully set out to establish himself in power as Antiochos IV Epiphanes (175-164); see IG II³ 1, 1323. As king he sponsored resumed construction of the monumental, unfinished, temple of Olympian Zeus at Athens (cf. Paus. 5.12.4; Polyb. 26.1.10; Livy 41.20.8). Whether or not he was resident at Athens at the time, this inscription, as plausibly reconstructed in IG, confirms that his close connection to Athens had begun some time before the death of Seleukos IV.
