Herodes set up (this statue of) the initiate Asklepios for Deo, favouring him in return for having warded off an illness.^[1]

[1] This base bears an elegiac couplet indicating that it supported a statue of Asklepios dedicated by Herodes Atticus (on whom see AIUK 11 (Ashmolean), no. 15 with note). He may have dedicated this after his recovery from an illness which struck him on his way back to Athens after his trial before emperor Marcus Aurelius at Sirmium in 175 AD (cf. Philostratos, Vit. Soph. 2.1.12 with Ameling). Asklepios was said to have been initiated into the Eleusinian Mysteries when his cult arrived in Attica in 420/19 BC, an event which was commemorated during the Eleusinian festival (see IG II³ 4, 810 with note). There was also a sanctuary of Asklepios at Eleusis (see IG II³ 4, 891 with note), but this statue was dedicated to Demeter (= Deo) in the sanctuary of Demeter and Kore.
