[1] This base is one of eight inscriptions from a sanctuary of Asklepios, which were found at Eleusis roughly 1.5 km north of the sanctuary of Demeter and Kore by the Kephisos river. They were found by the landowner D. Methenitis in the 1890s and reported by A. N. Skias (Πρακτικά της εν Αθήναις Αρχαιολογικής Εταιρείας 1898, 87-91), but have since been lost and the exact location of their findspot is no longer known. The others are IG II³ 4, 652, 892-896 and I Eleusis 686. An Imperial-period statue of a young man and a relief plaque depicting Pan were also found. These inscriptions show that the sanctuary was active from the late 5^th century BC until the late 2^nd century AD. IG II³ 4, 893 indicates that by the Imperial Period the sanctuary contained its own temple and was run by the same gene which administered the Mysteries. IG II³ 4, 652 records a religious association linked to the cult. The existence of this sanctuary reflects the close ties in Athens between cults of Asklepios and the Eleusinian gods (see IG II³ 4, 810, 1051, and K Clinton in R. Hägg, ed., Ancient Greek Cult Practice, 1994, 25-27). The base had a rectangular cutting in the top for insertion of a votive.
