[1] The base dedicated to Artemis Phosphoros dates to the 4th or 3rd century and was discovered built into a house on the northern slope of the Acropolis (C. L. Lawton, Agora XXXVIII, 2017, p. 35). Phosphoros (Light-bearer) is an epithet of Artemis in her capacity as a moon goddess. Other goddesses associated with light also bear this epithet, such as Hekate (Eurip. Helen, 569) and Eos (Eurip. Ion, 1157). There was a cult of the Phosphoroi in the Tholos (IG II³ 4, 1497-1498), connected with sacrifices offered to Artemis Phosphoros by the prytaneis of the Council (cf. IG II³ 1, 1295-1296, 1318). There are references to a sanctuary of Artemis Phosphoros in the Piraeus (Agora XV 240, l. 39; Clement of Alexandria, Stromata 1.163), which might be identical with the shrine of Artemis Mounychia, see (IG II³ 4, 1063).
