Ambrosios and Diopeithes dedicated me ⟦at public expense?⟧ to Artemis, a memorial of their ⟦excellence⟧ for those to come for all time.^[1]

[1] The inscription, which is in two roughly composed hexameter verses and a pentameter, is cut on the front of a stepped base with cuttings for a statue. “At public expense" (demosynei) and “excellence” (aretes) are inscribed in erasures. For the translation "at public expense“, cf. Hallof's German translation in IG Online. A less likely alternative is that "Demosyne" was an epithet of Artemis, cf. IG I³ 234, A15 with n. 1, and note the suggestion of G. Steinhauer, AM 113, 1998, 244-48 (SEG 49.190) that in place of DEMOSYNEI “ARISTOBOULEI” was originally inscribed. "Aristoboule" is an attested epithet of Artemis in the city deme Melite (cf. IG II³ 4, 1057). Ambrosios, an uncommon name, was the name of the eponymous archon ca. 290 BC (SEG 49.141, l. 3) and one possibility is that this dedication, inscribed with a epigram in archaising style (including the old-fashioned device of “making the stone speak” and the unabashed allusion to the arete of the dedicants), was a dedication commemorating that archonship. Diopeithes might in that case have been a colleague of Ambrosios, e.g. his deputy, paredros (cf. IG II³ 4, 42).
