[1] Diktynna or Diktynnaia is an epithet of Artemis, meaning ‘of the hunting nets’. Cretan goddess Britomartis was also known as Diktynna. She was also a goddess of hunting and fishing nets, who came to be identified with Artemis (Callim. Hymn in Dian. 189 and Eurip. Iphig. Taur. 127). Timothea's dedication to Artemis for her children reflects this amalgamation of Artemis and Britomartis, as well as Artemis' function as a protector of children. It was not uncommon for women to make dedications to female goddesses (R. Parker, Polytheism and Society, 2005, 439, n.83). See (IG II³ 4, 1337) for a similar dedication (by the same woman?). It was recut after Antiquity for use as a door lintel.
