[1] The altar dedicated to Artemis Soteria was found near a sanctuary in the Kerameikos, conventionally associated with Hekate, but which C. Graml argues should instead be associated with Artemis Soteiria, partially based on the findspot of this inscription (The Sanctuary of Artemis Soteira in the Kerameikos of Athens, 2020). The Kerameikos was a graveyard associated with the pollution of death in which Hekate revelled, and Hekate’s presence in the Kerameikos increased during the Roman period (R. Parker, Polytheism and Society, 2005, 57). The two goddesses were closely connected. In many instances, their functions overlapped and they were often syncretised as Artemis Hekate.
