[1] This is one of a set of triangular bases commemorating victories in the festival of the Tetrakomoi, in this case by the “village” Xypete. On the set, see IG II³ 4, 225 with notes, and for a similarly worded dedication, IG II³ 4, 227. [2] The precise significance of the term komastai in this context is uncertain. It may connote both “village (komē) members” and “revellers”, or perhaps participants in a procession or (choral/dance?) competition. (Ll. 8 and 9 are written over an erasure). [3] Face A preserves a list of the komarchs. Philton and Pamphilos (ll. 4–5), both sons of Aischytos, were apparently brothers. They either represented different “villages” (cf. IG II³ 4, 225, note 1) or perhaps all four were komarchs of Xypete. Pamphilos was created proxenos in an honorific decree from Argos, SEG 30.355. Note that the brothers were both komarchs and komastai.

The "Xypeteans" of this inscription are members of the kome of that name, but in the Cleisthenic system Xypete was a medium-sized deme (bouleutic quota not directly attested, perhaps 7, AIO 2687, 1-4, Agora XV 31, with notes, Traill, Demos and Trittys, 1986, 134 with 23-4) of the city trittys of Kekropis north-east of Piraeus. It was the location of the Herakleion of the Tetrakomoi and the findspot of the set of monuments of which this is one (cf. IG II³ 4, 225, with notes). It may also have been the deme within which the sanctuary of Hermes, Kephisos, and other deities at Echelidai, just south of the Long Walls, was located (cf. Lambert, Rationes, p. 189 with Rationes F9A, 8). There are no extant public inscriptions produced or resulting from actions by the deme except those associated with the Tetrakomoi.
