[1] Generals began to be entrusted with specific competencies in the mid-fourth century (cf. IG II² 4, 8, n. 2). In the Classical period, the hoplite general was responsible for major campaigns outside Attica. In the Hellenistic period, such campaigns were very rare and his main role was ensuring the security, food supply, and welfare of the city of Athens itself (protection of the countryside was the responsibility of the two generals of the countryside). The hoplite general remained the most prestigious military official in Athens: G. J. Oliver, War, Food, and Politics in Early Hellenistic Athens (2007), 163-64. The general of the fleet is not listed among the five generals with specific competencies by Ath. Pol. 61, but is mentioned in IG II² 682, ll. 4-5 (316/5 BC) and in other later inscriptions, e.g. IG II³ 1, 985, ll. 4-5, cf. Diod. Sic. 18.15.9. Two generals in charge of Piraeus were appointed according to Ath. Pol. 61.1; but in second (SEG 54.225, ll. 9-12) and first-century inscriptions (IG II³ 4 321) three are mentioned. Not mentioned in the surviving portion of this inscription are the two generals for the countryside (on which see I Rhamnous 3, with notes).
