[1] This now-lost stele is a choregic dedication of 332/1 BC commemorating a victory in the dithyrambic competition at the City Dionysia (cf. IG II³ 4, 460 with notes). The inscription was found in Thessaly on the southern border of ancient Hypata in the ruins of a Turkish fountain and was transcribed by Ludwig Ross in 1861. Like IG II³ 4, 472 the stone was apparently removed from Athens to Hypata in Medieval times because of a shortage of marble there. If the reconstruction of the text, which also goes back to Ross, is accurate, it can be ascribed to the City Dionysia since there is only one victorious tribe. The sponsor (choregos) Apollodoros, author of several speeches ascribed to Demosthenes, was also an active trierarch ([Dem.] 53.5, cf. Dem. 36, [Dem.] 50, etc.) and son of Pasion, a wealthy metic banker who was granted Athenian citizenship (Davies, APF 11672; J. Trevett, Apollodoros the Son of Pasion, 1992). Lysiades "of Athens" is also attested as the winning director seventeen years later in the sumptuous monument of Lysikrates in 335/4 BC (IG II³ 4, 460).
