[1] This marble stele is a choregic dedication commemorating a victory in dithyrambic competitions at the Thargelia (cf. IG II³ 4, 475 with notes). The names of the tribes and the sponsor are entirely lost. [2] On the lower part of the stone, there is a decree from the year 129/8 BC (Sokolowski, LSS 14) with new regulations for the cult of Apollo Pythios, including specific regulations on the Thargelia. As P. Wilson in The Greek Theatre and Festivals, 2007, 155 puts it, "this may represent a revival from near or total inactivity" of the Thargelia during the second century BC.
