Face A

The People were the sponsor (echorēgei). Sonikos was archon (175/4 BC).^[1] Competition-director (agōnothetēs) Drakontides son of Drakon of Paiania. Pandionis was victorious in the boys’ competition. Nikokles of Athens was pipe-player. Sosibios of Athens was director.

[1] On the introduction of the “competition-director” (agonothetes) in or shortly before 307/6 BC see IG II³ 4, 518, with notes. IG II³ 4, 538 apparently commemorated the same competition-directorship as this one. These are the latest in the series of agonothetic monuments. Choregic monuments were revived in the 1st century AD, IG II³ 4, 558.

This inscription carries the same text on both sides. There is a cutting in the top for a tripod. On the use of the ethnic, “of Athens”, unusual in Attica, cf. IG II³ 4, 460, with notes.
