[1] This pillar was dedicated to Asklepios along with Hygieia (the personification of health) and Hypnos (the personification of sleep) in the Asklepieion on the south slope of the Acropolis (on which, see ). Dedications to Hypnos are very rare and almost always associated with the cult of Asklepios (IG IV²,1 572-573; I Ephesos 4123). This association is due to the practice of incubation, in which a person would sleep in the sanctuary of Asklepios in the hope of seeing Asklepios in their dreams and receiving a cure for their illnesses from him (cf. IG II³ 4, 718).

The dedicator might be identified with Theorikos son of Syndromos who was ephebe in 107/6 BC (IG II² 1011, col. I, l. 108) or with his grandson (?) of the same name who was court president (thesmothetes), ca. 30 BC (IG II² 1727, l. 8). They are part of a prominent but complicated family that is attested from the late second century BC until the end of the first century AD (S. Aleshire, Asklepios at Athens, 1991, 133-37). The date of the inscription depends on the identification of the dedicator (cf. Schmalz). There is a cutting on top for the insertion of a votive.
