[1] This statue base was dedicated in the Asklepieion on the south slope of the Acropolis (on which, see IG II³ 4, 665). The archon Diotimos is assigned to 26/5 BC by Follet (Topoi 8, 1998, 250, cf. Byrne, Athenian Onomasticon) and to ca. 21/0 BC by Schmalz (Augustan and Julio-Claudian Athens, 74-75). Either way, this makes Theodoros the last firmly dated ‘democratic’ annual priest of Asklepios (see IG II³ 1, 359 with notes and IG I³ 35). Sometime between 9 BC and AD 14, this system was replaced with lifetime tenure (see IG II³ 4, 556A and 797). The god’s income might have consisted of endowments (cf. IG II³ 4 1768) or fees (e.g. the ‘drachma for Asklepios’ in Agora XIX P26, ll. 487-488). There is a square cutting on top for the insertion of a votive.
