Gods.^[1] Relief Timokrates son of Timokles of Eitea proposed: since Hippokles son of Demokles of Eitea . . . (5) . . . . . . the deme and does what good is in his power for the demesmen both now and in time past (10)by both word and deed, that the demesmen shall decide, to praise Hippokles son of Demokles of Eitea and crown him with a gold crown of 500 drachmas for his [excellence] (15)and justice towards the demesmen; and the treasurer in the archonship of [Niketes (332/1) ?] shall inscribe this decree and stand it in the sanctuary (20)of Basile on a stone stele and account to the demesmen for whatever the cost may be.

AIO's text follows that of SEG 28.102, except that Kazuhiro Takeuchi kindly notes from autopsy that two lines are missing after l. 4, not one, and that the clause justifying the honours was accordingly longer than that restored here by previous editors. He was also unable to confirm the Ν of the archon's name, Ν̣ι̣[κήτου] (18) and notes that there is accordingly some uncertainty about the date of this inscription. In 3-4 he reads [Δ|ημοκλέ]ους. Μinor adjusments to the text not impacting on the sense are also noted by Schwenk.

This inscription, which has the appearance of a repurposed funerary stele, was first edited by A. Kalogeropoulou, AD 25, 1970, A 204-214 (= SEG 28.102), and is the only extant decree of either of the two demes Eitea. There were small demes of this name in both Akamantis (bouleutic quota 2) and Antiochis (bouleutic quota 1 in IG II³ 4, 81, 63-64 , 2 in Agora XV 43, 222-6 and [Agora XV 55, 23-25]). The discovery of this inscription indicates that Grammatiko (west of Rhamnous towards Aphidna) was the location of one of them, most likely Antiochid Eitea (see Humphreys, Kinship, 1190-91, who notes that no demes of Akamantis are known to have been located north of Pentelikon). On demes in general see RO 46, with notes. The relief depicts the honorand being crowned by a female figure in larger scale, i.e. Basile (l. 18, cf. Lawton). This is the only deme that is known to have set up decrees in a sanctuary of Basile, though the cult is also attested in the deme Erchia, SEG 21.541, B 16 (cf. Lambert, ZPE 139, 2002, 75-82, this decree, n. 20). There is no indication that the honorand had performed a specific service for Basile; perhaps this sanctuary was a generic location for erection of decrees of this deme.

The proposer, Timokrates son of Timokles, was perhaps a descendant of the Timokles of Eitea who was treasurer of Athena in 423/2 BC (IG I³ 302, l. 30; 303, l. 39; 369, ll. 36, 46, 48, 52). As commonly with prominent men in the demes, the honorand, Hippokles son of Demokles of Eitea, is otherwise unknown. His daughter Samakion's funerary monument is IG II² 6007 (Kerameikos).

In content this is a typical honorific decree of a deme; like most others of its genre, it dates to the second half of the 4th cent. BC (though there is a degree of uncertainty about the specific year, see above, Textual Note).
