[1] This inscription regulates entry to the cave of Pan at Marathon (cf. Pausanias 1.32.7), worshipped there by the ephebes because he had helped the Athenians in the battle of Marathon (Anth. Pal. 16.232-233, etc.). Although the ephebes dedicated an inscribed version of this regulation, it probably reflects a local custom that was already in place. The text seems to prohibit wearing colourful garments when entering the sanctuary; similar regulations from other regions prescribe wearing white clothing only. Cf. Lupu (and in Attica compare e.g. AIUK 1 (Petworth), no. 1, l. 5).
