[1] This is a small rectangular shaft (a 'cippus') made of Pentelic marble, surmounted by a flat projecting fascia and a rounded top. The rounded top resembles a round cake, which was a frequent offering to the gods, and thus the cippus itself stood as a type of eternal offering for the gods. The cippus is left rough below for insertion into a base (Meritt 1941, pp. 62-63). For more on Artemis Soteira see IG II/III³ 4, 1058.
